But, over time we went past globalisation and into politics and economics more generally. We have had some people from both sides of politics, and have kept up the approach of making a point of respectfully hearing from all sides. A lot of people I've known from lefty circles have said the discussion was very stimulating, and I recall a committed Marxist listening intently to our most right wing person giving his historical perspective.
The group has started with people I've known, but the links have grown. We have people with involvement in : Attac, The Summer Hill-Ashfield Greens, the Humanists, the Centre for Independent Studies; and also a range of professions - programmers in financial houses, economists, lawyers, defence scientists, environmental engineers and so on.
We spent some time without a name. I was toying with some connection to the Sydney Push, but it was presumptious to claim it. We're certainly into discussion, like the Sydney Push, but are politically different and have different interests. Ann Young, previously president of the NSW Rationalists, suggested the name 'Sydney Shove' and we went with that.
Recently, it seemed wortwhile to go public - to give ourselves an identity in cyberspace, so we're in a better position to influence debate, attract speakers, and also interested members of the general public.
And so we have a web page.
